Love

Finally, don’t forget the power of a love story. Most Hollywood movies that involve a quest or one of the other structures also have a love story as a subplot, like The Count of Monte Cristo, whose hero is motivated by revenge for the wrongs done him by his best friend, but also by his undying love for the woman both men pursue. And then there are of course the great love stories: Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, It Happened One Night, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, Beauty and the Beast, and every single one of Shakespeare’s comedies.

It’s important to understand that there are two kinds of love stories – the ones that end happily, and the ones that don’t. Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, or Twelfth Night or A Midsummer Night’s Dream are love stories that end happily with successful marriages and are called comedies. In Romeo and Juliet, on the other hand, the two star-crossed lovers die, and hence the tale is a tragic love story.

It’s usually the boy that falls in love upon meeting the girl, loses the girl through misunderstanding or plot complication, and then wins her back in the end. Of course, gender can be reversed or eliminated entirely. There are robot love stories (Wall-E) and love stories with virtually every possible combination of entities including a small boy and a red balloon (The Red Balloon).

Typically, though, the boy wins the girl by achieving a level of honesty that he hasn’t had before. In comedic treatments of the story, for example, the boy will be concealing some appalling secret that, if revealed, could jeopardize the relationship. Sometimes both the boy and the girl harbor secrets. It is not until the secrets are out, and the complications are worked through, that the two can have a chance to get together. And the point is that they are both different because of the experience. The boy has learned (if the story is true to form) something about the importance of commitment and honesty. The girl has learned that her boy is not perfect, but still worthy of love. For example, in the recent comedy Going the Distance, Drew Barrymore’s character has to work through the realization that her boyfriend is unwilling to move across the country to be with her, leaving her torn between career and relationship. This example is typical of many.

The modern business world is full of mergers, partnerships, joint ventures, and the like - all of which are potential love stories. If it seems like a stretch, look at the way the press and the participants describe any merger – they’ll call it a marriage if it goes through, or talk about the wooing of one company by another, and so on.
